Stallion spectacle in market town
TOMORROW is Barley Saturday in Cardigan, when the streets of the market town will come to a standstill for the iconic stallion show and parade, which is unique to the town.
This historic horse spectacle has been a fixture of the town since the 19th century - always on the last Saturday in April. After the horses in the parade come a selection of vintage vehicles including tractors, wagons and motorbikes.
Last year over 2,500 people flocked to Cardigan on Barley Saturday, so plan ahead and get there in plenty of time to park. Parking for spectators is at Cardigan football pitch on Gwbert Road. Disabled parking is available at the main school entrance. For parking to view the parade, use the town car parks.
The show judging starts at 11.30am, with the parade set to kick off at 2pm. Road closures will be in place for the parade from around 1.30pm.
Cardigan councillor Clive Davies said on social media that he's hoping the spectacle will again mean the town is buzzing, bringing a boost to trade.
He said: "Less than a week to go, are you ready for Sadwrn Barlys? Cardigan traders are getting ready. For those visiting, make sure you have a browse. And why not stay for an evening's entertainment, drink and dining experience. Be sure to book, it's going to be busy in town.
"Last year we had at its peak over 2,500 people in the town centre; hoping to reach similar again this year. "Thanks go to the army of volunteers who make this spectacle possible, which is unique to Cardigan."
Good luck to everyone competing and joining the parade!
